Savall’s Transcendent Purcell Fantasias for Viols

Everything about this CD is remarkable. First, there is Purcell’s music–mature, moody, and complex fantasies for various combinations of viols, masterfully written by a composer just 21 years old! Intricate in contrapuntal construction and romantic in expression, these fantasies are unique in the history of English music, compositions that bridge the gap between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Second, there are the amazing performances, meticulous as possible, yet full of wild abandon and passion. Then, there is the sound, which perfectly captures the music and its ideal performers in a recording that is close up and personal, yet never rough or coarse. I have already written too much, for once in a while there are perfect recordings that defy criticism; and this is one of them. Stop reading, find a copy, and be transported to another realm.
