CHICAGO, November 21, 2019—Cedille Records founder and president James Ginsburg has been nominated for the 2020 Grammy Award for Producer of The Year, Classical, his first nomination in that category. Nominations were announced November 20 by the Recording Academy.
Ginsburg’s Cedille productions released during the Grammy eligibility period, Oct. 1, 2018, to Aug. 31, 2019, include (in alphabetical order):
- Blues Dialogues, with violinist Rachel Barton Pine and pianist Matthew Hagle.
- Project W – Works by Diverse Women Composers, with conductor Mei-Ann Chen and the Chicago Sinfonietta.
- Silenced Voices, with the Black Oak Ensemble.
- 20th Century Harpsichord Concertos, with harpsichordist Jory Vinikour and the Chicago Philharmonic, conducted by Scott Speck.
- Twentieth Century Oboe Sonatas, with oboist Alex Klein and pianist Phillip Bush.
- Winged Creatures and Other Works for Flute, Clarinet & Orchestra, with clarinetist Anthony McGill, flutist Demarre McGill, and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Allen Tinkham.
Ginsburg has produced nearly 150 releases for Cedille and other labels over the past 30 years.

Launched in November 1989 by James Ginsburg, Grammy Award-winning Cedille Records (pronounced say-DEE) is dedicated to showcasing and promoting the most noteworthy classical artists in and from the Chicago area.
A highlight of Cedille’s 30th anniversary season, 2019–2020, is its first-ever Emerging Artist Competition. Individual performers and ensembles from the Chicago area are competing for the opportunity to make a recording produced by and released on the award-winning label. Semifinal and final rounds of judging will take place in May 2020 during public performances by the contestants.
The audiophile-oriented label releases every new album in multiple formats — physical CD, 96 kHz, 24-bit, studio-quality FLAC download, and 320 Kbps MP3 download — and on major streaming services.
An independent nonprofit enterprise, Cedille Records is the label of Cedille Chicago, NFP. Sales of physical CDs and digital downloads and streams cover only a small percentage of the label’s costs. Tax-deductible donations from individual music-lovers and grants from charitable organizations account for most of its revenue.
