These are stunning performances! Although Fritz Reiner didn’t have at his disposal the scholarly editions of this music that are currently in favor, it’s hard to resist the idiomatic flair and virtuosity that he brings to bear, whether in the four colorful episodes that comprise the overture to William Tell, or the witty instrumental exchanges in The Thieving Magpie. These renditions epitomize precision placed in the service of excitement and lyrical spontaneity, which after all is what Rossini’s music is all about. The one possible regret is that the total playing time lasts only around 47 minutes–but then you still get the most popular pieces in sonics that have held up very well indeed. No need to say more: if you love Rossini overtures, you will make this disc a cornerstone of your collection. [5/25/2005]
