I previously reviewed this recording when it was issued a few years ago on Musical Heritage Society (type Q2920 in Search Reviews). The current release is on the EMI label via Arkivmusic.com’s on-demand service. The main difference, aside from the restoration of the original packaging and booklet, is the slightly more open sound, with finer detail and greater presence–all of which allows us to better hear Michel Plasson’s stirring performance of Chausson’s infrequently played symphony. Having the original booklet notes also enhances our enjoyment of Chausson’s unfamiliar Soir de fête and Viviane, even if the printed text is near-microscopic in size. The Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse plays beautifully, with discernible excitement throughout. It’s a fine thing to have this disc available once again! [12/20/2007]
