Zefiro is a 17-member original instrument band with great spirit and a particular fondness for wind instruments. This CD presents them in seven concertos by Vivaldi for various instruments–a stirring C major two-trumpet work is followed by a minor key oboe concerto, full of plaintive solo work. A bassoon concerto of startling virtuosity leads into one for both bassoon and oboe, with Vivaldi (and Zefiro) making the most of the instruments’ tonal contrasts, and then two oboes take center stage for a particularly rich-sounding work. Some very fancy horn playing is next, and the soloists are remarkable for their control over the two valveless horns which can sound all too accidental in lesser players’ hands (and lips). The final work asks for solos for a pair of violins and oboes, and a single bassoon with the usual group of strings as back-up. The sound is lush and rich and Zefiro’s playing is superb throughout. Vivaldi fans will have a field day with this fascinating CD.
